Birdweek

Birdwatching and photography on Lord Howe Island

Lord Howe Island is a bird watching paradise! With 238 recorded species of permanent and migratory birds, many only found on this Island, there is so much to explore. Many species are curious and surprisingly easy to approach, so it’s not unusual to get close up to mother birds feeding their chicks, Sooty terns sitting on the sand, White terns perched in a Norfolk Pine…you get the picture. Whether you are an avid birdwatcher or photographer, a part-time twitcher or just a lover of nature, the experience is breathtaking.

As a naturalist and photographer with over 40-years’ experience on the Island, Ian Hutton is the ideal guide. He shares his in-depth knowledge, his photography skills and even his “secret” bird watching spots to ensure a world class experience.

Throughout the week you will be centrally based in a family lodge, with a convenient location and private in-room kitchen. On most days we will set out together to explore the Island’s birds: discovering huge colonies of seabirds, capturing that once in a lifetime shot of a courting Red-tailed tropicbird or glimpsing the rarely seen Little shearwaters.

Every evening we come together for a meal at one of the Island’s many fine restaurants to discuss our discoveries and compare photographs. On some evenings Ian hosts lectures at the Lord Howe Island Museum, giving you an opportunity to learn more about the Island, and its birds.

With guided tours and lectures combined with plenty of time to rest and opportunities to do your own Island exploration, every day is a new adventure on Bird Week.
